What is Lugana?

Lugana is a picturesque, white wine-specific viticultural region in northern Italy. The vineyard area straddles the regional border between Lombardy in the west and Veneto in the east. It sits at the southern end of Lake Garda and the vines provide a relatively new addition to the landscape of fishing villages and castle-topped towns.

Grape Variety

Ca' dei Frati Lugana DOC uses only one grape variety, named Turbiana, that is genetically identical to Trebbiano di Lugana and Verdicchio Bianco.

Flavor

On the nose, there are hints of ripe fruit, peaches, yellow apples, rose petals with fresh, balsamic notes. Very fresh and elegant on the palate.

What people say?

“With my first taste of Lugana, I was transported. No, not to the autostrade. I was transported to the places I wanted to drink this wine next: my patio in the summer, a harbor-side restaurant with the catch-of-the-day on my plate. On a boat that is setting sail for some place distant”

The famous Sirmione Castle

The castle is named, ‘Scaliger Castle,’ and it is in Sirmione, the same location where I Frati Lugana DOC wine is from. Its nickname, “The Sinking Castle,” comes from the rising waters of Lake Garda. It is truly an example of medieval port fortification. Nowadays, the castle is a popular tourist attraction due to its out-of-a-fairytale appearance.

Did you know?

Ca’ dei Frati in Italian means for “friar house,” because it was once owned by monks who grew grapes there.

FAQ

What does DOC mean ?

Lugana DOC is a small, protected denomination that straddles the border between Lombardy and Veneto and produces only white wines from the high-quality Turbiana grape variety, also known as Trebbiano di Lugana.

Italy’s Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) system. It specifies not just the type of grape and where the exact location, but also harvest yields, alcohol levels, the use of barrels and guarantees the quality standard of certain wines which pass a government taste test.

How to store it after opening?

Re-cork it correctly. Do not insert the dry side in the bottle. Then refrigerate it: the cool temp will slow the process significantly.

What is the suggested serving temperature?

The suggested serving temperature is 54° F.

Why does Lugana use dark bottles?

Thanks to its structure, Lugana is one of the few white wines that can age. Since wine is damaged and degraded by light, dark bottles help protect their contents from exposure to light, which could cause the wine to age prematurely. A good Lugana wine can easily be stored and aged for quite a few years.
