Located in the heart of Gallura in northern Sardinia, where Vermentino di Gallura is grown and vinified, the Capichera winery is widely known as the estate that made Vermentino (the grape) and Vermentino di Gallura (the appellation) famous worldwide. More than four decades ago (the winery celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2018), Capichera became a pioneer of Italian white wine when it replanted its vineyards and focused on the production of single-vineyard Vermentino, grown in some of Gallura’s most coveted parcels. The winery also introduced temperature-controlled vinification processes, including stainless steel tanks, to capture Vermentino’s natural freshness and vibrant fruit flavors. And perhaps most importantly, Capichera was among the first in Sardinia to adopt meticulous vineyard management and staggered harvest times — practically unheard of at the time in Sardinia. The winery’s oldest vineyard lies near the famous “Tomb of the Giants” in Santa Teresa Gallura, one of the region’s most visited archeological sites. Its other vineyards are located in two Gallura townships, Azarchena and Palau, now also closely associated, thanks to Capichera, with the production of high-quality Vermentino. The winery’s uncompromising vineyard management, Gallura’s legendary granitic soils, and the immense biodiversity of Sardinia’s wild landscape are the key elements to the production of what is considered the benchmark for Vermentino today.
